| The Singur Land grab action of 2nd Dec 2006 by the West Bengal Govt Police was covered by the press to a great extent, even though the camera persons and correspondents were hammered up by the Police. Many of the press reporters had to spend considerable time in Hospitals! Since the pre-election campaign in May 06, to the WB assembly, we observed that the so called free-press was divided right from the middle. Two of the TV channels came out openly in support of the Chief Minister Sri. Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. It was found that they were the propaganda arms of the ruling party in the garb of Free Press! What stunned the civil society most was the shameless pro-CPIM (ruling party) coverage of a TV channel belonging to a very trusted free press group. This group was the most trusted press of the people of Bengal. They had, at one time, shown us, what is now called "Investigative Journalism". They stood by the people during the freedom movement. Withstood the wrath of the same political party in power for being courageous. In fact the Bengali culture and mind set is to a large extent shaped by this group. They have told the Bengalis, what was good literature, good Poetry, good Art and Sculpture, good Culture! They may be having their reasons for taking such a stance, but surely they have willfully managed to confuse and mislead a great number of people of this state. The out come of the last election is an indication in that direction. It is now clear that the side they had taken, instead of being honest and truthful, have led this state in to Singur and Nandigram Massacre, Rizwanur and Ration scandals and so on. The Nandigram Action was planned more meticulously. It was made sure that only the trusted press got access to the scene of action. Thus Unlike Singur, we have very little footage and photos of the Nandigram Carnage. Police video is perhaps one of the few footage of the police action, though they will surely not show most of what actually happened. Some TV channels, namely Kolkata TV, TARA NEWS and ETV and a few others have now emerged as the real free press. Thus they were not allowed to enter the action site in Nandigram. Some of their reporters even narrowly escaped being killed by the Ruling Party goons, popularly(!) called Harmads. Thus the news that filtered out by word of mouth and eye-witness accounts of the survivors, were our only source of News. A lot seems to be too gory to be true. These atrocities have been reflected in the literature of that time. After the CBI enquiry into Nandigram massacre got called off for mysterious reasons, the ruling party hands got all the time they needed to sanitise the area. All that we hear now is that only 14 are dead. No body even speaks of those who are missing. We had heard of trekker loads of dead mutilated bodies being dumped in to the sea by fishing trawlers. Will we ever know the truth? What ever may have been the truth the people will never believe what Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharya's govt or his cronies say.
