Open Letter to Joy Goswami
Let us not get into the cliche debate of "Art for art's sake' or "Art as a tool for social changes". Undoubtably Joy Goswami is(???) a major poet of Bengali literature of our time. But with deep regret I confess that his poems do not give me the same pleasure as I used to get reading his earlier writings.
Two things- firstly, Joy started writing prose & excellent prose. But is it important for a good poet to write prose ignoring poetry? After a long pause in good Bengali poetry, he showed high resourcefulness. When he writes prose, we lose a highly talented poet.
Secondly, probably since his collection 'Golla', he has shown a remarkable change in his choice of subject and striking change in the form. Now with his increasing involvement with contemporary politics, his poems are giving sounds of stones pelted & pipegun s#@*%!s & cracking of bones, but lost the former beautiful muse & magic, which probably had a longer & deeper impression on mind (I still recall lines from his 'Aj Jodi Amake Jiggyesh Karo' which had fire in them).
I don't believe Joy can influence people in the way Pablo Neruda could. I also know that if the contemporary history & suffering of people do not stir an artist, he or she is not an artist in the truest sense. But the expression- that matters!
Joy, I don't believe you'll ever come accross this insignificant lines by me, but if you, by any luck of mine, do so, please, please, please, give it a thought. We will wait for another 'Meghbalikar Rupkatha' & so many wonderful poems of yours which stir us from inside. Joy, after Arun Mitra & Shankhya Ghosh, who will bear the torch?
