Debashish Roy
Born on 23rd March 1968, in a traditionally rich musical background, his father Kamal Krishna Roy, used to go
around the villeges singing "Krishna Yatra" and "Kobigaans". Mother Arati Roy was a disciple of the Great Actor
Singer and Rabindra Sangeet stalwart Pankaj Mallick on one hand and Suprobha Sarkar, the Doyen of Nazrul
Geeti on the other.
Debashis was tutored in Indian Classical and Dhrupad Music by the famous Music Director Dr. Santosh
Mukhopadhyay. He also came in contact with Music Director Ajoy Das.
At the early age of 18, he composed the music for songs in memory of the great African Poet Benjamin Moloise
who was executed by the Apartheid regime. Later on Abhijit Bandopadhyay gave him further lessons in music
and voice training.
Music Albums:
His very popular Album "Bangla Jolchhe" (Bengal is Burning) has been released and is a big hit with the
oppressed and state-terrorised masses in remote villages of West Bengal, which is undergoing a political
turmoil following Singur & Nandigram Agitations. In this Album he set tunes to the poems of Dushto Kobi (The
Bad Poet)and music arrangement was done by Amit Roy.
Performances:
Has been performing as a vocalist from a very early age.
Being a member of a Social Service and Human Rights group, he has been performing regularly at various
functions.
