With flowing colours he created magic
Phalguni Dasgupta is one of those painters who has
created artists with as much zeal as he has created works
of art. As a senior critic once said, he was one teacher who
was not content to rest on the laurels for being one or the
other. I myself have known him as a teacher, a master
watercolourist, and a perfect human being.
A demonstration by him years ago left the students
spellbound. They could see the magic he created with
flowing colours, on a semi wet paper. A plethora of shapes
mingle with each other to create magnificent textures as sky
and the foliage, water and the trees, the foreground and the
background. I would understand the spontaneous and the
playful nature of the medium and explore it in my future years.
If his art is imbued in humanity, it is because he himself is
steeped in human feelings. I will always remember him as a
gentle, soft spoken person with a helpful attitude towards the
students. He inspired young talents of yester years - who are
now established artists.
May God give him many more years to continue the good
work he has been doing.
