Come O Mother Queen of the Village (1)

This poem was written in Bengali and published in a periodical Pallichitra’s Asharh 1316 B
(June 1909) issue, from Bagerhat of Khulna district now in Bangladesh. For this poem, the
Poet and the Editor Bidhubhusan Bose were charged with sedition and sentenced to 2 years
and the Press owner Abani Mohan Deb to sentenced to 2 months of rigorous
imprisonment by the District Magistrate of Khulna. The sentence was set aside in the Hon.
High Court of Calcutta. The poet however served a sentence of deportation to the ill-famous
Cellular Jail at Port Blair for the “Nangla Political Dacoity Case” or “The Khulna Conspiracy
Case” between 19010 - 1917.

The Pallichitra for Asarh 1316 (June-July 1909) has the following poem contributed by
Nagendra Nath Chandra, who styles himself as santan or son.
Come O Mother Queen of the Village (1)

The whole day is about to expire,
Come O Mother Queen of the Village ;
Let thy sons listening to (thy) sweet words
stand up dancing carrying off the crown of
victory from the head of (their) enemies in
the struggle for existence,
In order to deck thee out as an Empress,
I have offered up my life.
At the same time when through ignorance and
temptation, and persecution by enemies, (2)
the golden seat was lost, we did "not under-
stand, did not see, realising it in the heart.
Now thy sweet call comes, filling (all) India,
(এখন তোমার মধুর আবাহন আসিছে ভারত ভরে )
I see thee in a new light at the door of the
temple of my heart.
Under the weight of the demon’s tread, there
are no parijat(3) flowers in Nandan (Indra’s
garden of paradise).
Indra’s wife in paradise in the garb of a begger
woman lies sick unto death (lit. dead unto
the vitals).
Those heroes who are immortal, seeing these
things before them, remain with eyes shut in
shame and disgust, like cowards.
(জানি না, জননী, স্বদেশের তরে, কখন দেবতা দল
উঠিবে জ্বালিয়া কালানল সম নাশিতে অসুর বল।
অন্তঃশক্তি পরে করিয়ে নির্ভর, আপন আয়ুধ ধরে,
স্বর্গরাজ্য পুনঃ করিতে স্থাপিত, রুধির তর্পণ করে।)
I do not know when the band of Gods will fire
up like the worldly destroying flame, for the
sake of the Mother, the Native land, to
destroy the power of the demons,---will, rely-
ing on their own strength and seizing their
own weapons, re-establish heavenly dominion,
making an offering(4) of blood. The six
enemies coming into my heart like demons
sit (waiting) at the door of the temple of my
heart in order to make (me) sink in sin.
(But) has he anything to fear who has a
mother who grants emancipation, on plac-
ing whom in the heart, bondage beats a
retreat?
So long, deceived by enemies, and oppressed
by ignorance, I was in a state of forgetfulness.
Thou, O Mother, haying come and not hav-
ing won my heart, you went away neglected.
Through the influence of that sin, the smart-
ing of this bondage burns in my heart.
Perhaps it has been on seeing that, that thou
hast called me to destroy the spell of ignorance,
Receiving a new life on hearing the blessing
in the shape of a lull
I have come with my heart and a sacrifice to
be offered up at thy worship
I have brought my heart to place thee upon it.
Come to the seat of my heart, to the mixture of blood.
Come O Mother, Queen of the village.
1. In the sense of apposition, Queen
being the same as the village.

ties of the human nature or human enemies.
The word Ripur (enemy) being capable of
both the meanings, I should be disposed
to take in the latter sense, as being more in
keeping with the context.

to grow in Indra’s heaven.

4. The word tarpan (from the root trip
to please) means an offering of water to
the names of deceased ancestors.

গভীর বনে কঠোর মনে গেল যখন শেখ ফরিদ
সিদ্ধি বিনা ফিরিবে না ছিল তখন এমন জিদ্।
বছর বারো চায়নি কারো মুখের পানে পেটের লাগি'
কাটতে বাধন করতো সাধন সারাদিবস রাত্রি জাগি।
এমনি করি মায়ার ডুরি ছিন্ন করে যোগের বলে,
যোগীর ঋদ্ধি ‘বাক্যসিদ্ধি’ প্রাপ্ত হ'য়ে ফরিদ চলে।

স্নানের পরে আসতে ঘরে পাখীরবিষ্ঠা পড়লো গায়
শাস্তি দিতে লাল আখিতে যেমন ফরিদ দেখলো তায়
ভস্ম হ’য়ে পড়লো ভূঁয়ে দেখে ফরিদ হাস্য ভরে
ভস্ম নিয়ে জীবন দিয়ে গর্ব্বে আবার ফিরলো ঘরে।

চলতে পথে পিপাসাতে ফরিদ সেখ কুয়ার পাশে
সেথায় শুধু কৃষক-বধূ কুকুর সাথে ফিরছে বাসে।
ফকির দেখে কুকুর ডাকে ফরিদ তা'কে করতে ছাই
ক্রুদ্ধ দৃষ্টি অগ্নিবৃষ্টি করলো তবু মরণ নাই।
কোথায় ঋদ্ধি যোগীর সিদ্ধি ব্যর্থ-রোষে ফরিদ কাঁপে ;
“আঃ কর কি নয়ত পাখী ছাই হবেনা তোমার শাপে।”
সবিস্ময়ে ভয়ে ভয়ে সুধায় ফরিদ "কোথায় পেলে
ঘট্ লো বনে ফুটলো মনে যোগ কি তুমি শিখেছিলে?”
বল্ লো নারী “ধার না ধারি তন্ত্র মন্ত্র যোগ বিয়োগ
স্বামী আমার সব সাধনার আমি তাঁহার যোগাই ভোগ।
এক দিনেতে অর্দ্ধরেতে চেয়েছিলেন তৃষার জল,
আনিয়া দেখি রুদ্ধ আখি দাড়িয়ে রলাম চরণ-তল
নিদ্রা যখন ভাঙ্গবে তখন দিব বলে জলের পাত্র,
ভাঙ্গলো না আর নিদ্রা তাঁহার কেটে গেল সকল রাত্র।
প্রভাত হ'লে নয়ন মেলে দেখলে স্বামী আমার পানে
খুললো হিয়ার গুপ্তদুয়ার কি-যে পেলাম কে তা জানে
হারিয়ে দিশা ভুলিয়ে তৃষা ধরলো ফরিদ নারীর পা,
“ওমা আমায় দেও কণা তার মীর সেবায় পেলে যা।”
