Amal Bawali was born on Born 6th September 1957 in Cooper’s Refugee Camp at Ranaghat in
Nadia district of West Bengal in India. His family is from Sealkathi village under Bhandaria Police
Station in Barisal district of undivided Bengal. His family was forced to migrate to India after the
partition as refugees and as a result Amal was born in the Refugee Camp.

He was forced to sing at a very early age, in fact even before he stopped feeding on his mother’s
milk! He learned to play the Harmonium and used to go out with his maternal uncle Nirmalendu
Sadhak to sing folk and devotional songs, as a means of livelihood. In those days he had even
earned a good name for himself as a child singer in Shyamnagar area.

His maternal uncle Nirmalendu Sadhak was his first music teacher. Later on he took music lessons in
Classical and light classical Indian music from his Guru Hiren Chakrabarty. He also learnt Nazrul
Geeti (Songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam) from the master Biman Mukhopadhyay.

Amal Bawali is a popular Singer of mainly Folk and Devotional Songs. But his album “Jhanda Niya
Dhandabaji”, published in 2009 is exceptional in a way that this CD has songs about Cottuption in
our modern day life and polity. Srikanta Acharya, Sriradha Babdyopadhyay, Sayantani Majumdar,
Srikumar Chattopadhyay, Atanu Sanyal, Sukantha Adhikary are some of the illustrious names who
have lent their voices to his lyrics and tunes.
