Surajit Das
Surajit Das was born in Nilphamari,
in undivided India, now in Bangladesh, in 1935.
He grew up in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. During his teens he became famous
as a body builder, when he was declared 'Mr.Hercules of India' in 1952.
Today Surajit Das is one of the Contemporary Masters in Indian Sculpture.
A First Class Graduate from the Govt Arts College Kolkata, 1959. He started his life as an artist with the
Geological Survey of India (GSI).
His distinguished carrier has to his credit, some of the turning points in the History of Indian Sculpture.
He was the first to make
Life size Dinosaurs for GSI at Hyderabad and later on for the Museum of
Natural History in New Delhi. These were executed in the year1970, much before the craze for Dinosaurs
caused by Steven Spielburg's movie 'The Jurrassic Park'. The use of Fibre Glass in making the Dinosaurs
is also perhaps the first application of this medium in Out door Sculpture in India, on such a gigantic scale.
He is also a member of the Calcutta Painters group.
This page is a tribute to Surajit Das by Milan Sengupta towards his teacher of Sculpture.
