Pachu Ray   is a very familiar name in essays and letters in practically all the top
ranking newspapers and magazines published from Kolkata. He usually does not use
"Dr" before his name. He was born in Kolkata. His father Dr. Satyendra Nath Roy was
a reputed physician. Mother was Renukona Roy. After finishing his schooling from
the Metropolitan Institute, Main, near Thanthania Kali Temple in North Kolkata, he
joined the Vidyasagar College and cleared his B.Sc in 1961. He passed his M.Sc
from Rajabajar Science College in Bio-Chemistry. In 1978 he got his Doctorate from
the Calcutta University for his thesis on "Anti-Fungal Properties of Indian Medicinal
Plants". He took up a job with The Central Drug Laboratories" under "Ministry of
Health & Family Welfare" in Kolkata, which he continued till his retirement.

He started writing at a very early age on Science related topics in a Bengali magazine
called "Homeopathic Chikitsa". This magazine was published by M.Bhattacharjee &
Company and used to be edited by his father. He joined the Leftist movements right
from his college days. He joined the CPI(M) party and rose to become a member of
the North Kolkata Zonal Committee of his party. He left the party in 1973 due to
difference of opinion.

Being in to politics, he had started writing on Politics from his college days. After this
there was no limit to selection of topics for his writings. His writings were and are still
being published in all front line newspapers and magazines of Kolkata. Stories,
Theatre, Cinema, Science, Social injustice, Politics, Economics, nothing could escape
his pen !

The broadening of the Indian socio-cultural vision as a result of the Communist
Movement in India, led to a group of highly creative persons believing in a different
form of Idealism of the highest order. Pachu Ray belongs to this group. He has kept
himself free from organised institutions as he does not want to compromise his
personal freedom, which he believes, he may have to shed otherwise. His pen has
undertaken the role of social conscience for almost four decades through his writings.

He was moved by the Nandigram Massacre and has been protesting all through at all
forums. We feel honoured for being able to publish some of his writings here in our
website
